What if an old map uses a thing type or texture in which a newer version is available? Would we have to port the old type or could we just replace it with the newer version?

a new exit sector, y'know how you have to wait a couple seconds before you actually start going to the next map? With this exit sector, as soon as you enter it, it starts transitioning to the next map, kind of like half life.

That's not how copyright works, copyright.gov says "Everyone is a copyright owner. Once you create an original work and fix it, like taking a photograph, writing a poem or blog, or recording a new song, you are the author and the owner" just because they don't state that it's art doesn't mean...
