Ray the Flying Squirrel

Ray the Flying Squirrel v1

Sprites are the shining glory here. They look great and 10,000x better than the sega sonic sprite rips from 2.1 ray.

But the gameplay is almost identical to his 2.1 counterpart with balance adjustments and the additions of wall cling and the flutter(?). Once you lock the rhythm down, you can make great distances.

The new additions help make it feel slightly new but its functionally the same ray, thats ok.

I think this mod is really cool! The sprites look amazing (as always), and he's still fun to play around with while still trying to get used to his control.

But I can't lie, I think he may be a bit TOO nerfed here.

I understand why, we don't want him breaking levels like breaking a gram cracker multiple times for funsies, but it's almost impossible to gain any height at all, and when you do, you usually get hit with the decay and lose even more height.

I think you should improve his height gain a little bit at least, to make it easier to use his trademark ability and fly and glide over portions (which is REALLY fun and why the cape powerup and in Mania Plus are like beloved in their respective games), while still requiring skill to actually break levels.

Though, because I haven't used him all that much (I just got trying him out recently of course), this COULD just be me having a skill issue. But regardless, Ray's awesome.

Amazing work Team Combi-Rings!

Ray is a very good character, well really not bad, but I would like to say a couple of problems, especially for those who first time playing for him:
1. His Glide is a bit broken. Yes, after a while you can get a little bit of a boost (like me, it won't be there for long), but for Vanilla SRB2 Levels it will be hard to play him, so I recommend taking open and high levels, like Bricked Busted Zone, Frozen Fissure from OLDC 2021 R2. It helps.
2. His sprites are a bit mismatched with his palette. You have to either change the default color or the skin color.
So basically it's a speedrun character, though vertical, I haven't tried him much on horizontal levels yet.

I enjoy the Sprite work very much, wouldn't be a character I would enjoy playing regularly or not even at all. I am not one to be dishonest with myself nor when I try to push feedback. It lacks comfort and it would perhaps deserve some QOL additions.

While I see quite quality work put there, it doesn't necessarily feel great in the air. I understand I am an oddity and a minority since I am playing with only a keyboard but Ray feels heavy to steer the jaw rotation, simply it is slower than I think would be comfortable.

There are definitely two odd additions in play a bit noisy element is the speed lines, while they give a sense of speed, they literally fly into your face. So I would recommend either making them translucent enough or not having them at all.

Instead of wall clinging (2nd oddity) I would really focus on making touching walls more forgiving, mere touch of corner can cancel out flight. While that's a thing even on the ground, at least you can be sure you are on the ground while in the air you are running into the risk of falling into the pit. And in cases of corners, the clinging function won't even run.

Maybe that isn't your fault and perhaps it already was fixed, but in my current next build of SRB2, Ray defaults to SKINCOLOR_BLUE.

I would like to say something more positive to end this quite negative feedback sandwich, but I don't want to delve into specifics of how good Ray sprites are. However, I can appreciate how Ray is vanilla-styled, I think that deserves a mention.

It's everything I ever wanted out of a Ray mod, and it's made by the Chads known as Team Combi-Rings themselves! Ray's gliding definitely takes a while to get used to, as pulling up from Ray's glide doesn't always guarantee you getting extra height like SMW's Cape Feather mechanics, but I think that helps it not bust maps wide open. Ray is so expressive and adorable, and I was squealing with delight with every action. Bravo! This was an absolute delight of a surprise!

He's definitely a lot of fun to use, but I have to agree with EmiShoTony; he feels like he got hit with the nerf bat a little too hard regarding flight decay which makes it difficult for him to move vertically. I also feel like his Wall Cling is a bit too sensitive; oftentimes when I glide close to a wall, even when I'm not facing it he sticks to the surface and completely breaks my pacing, which makes trying to glide around a corner difficult. He certainly shines in wide-open areas, but it'd be nice if his kit could be better utilized in more narrow spaces.

Amazing, I've been needing a new Ray mod because without 3d models the other one I have is just segasonic sprites.

I also love how it controls, it feels like a new twist on the mania style, and it works in 3d so I'm happy.

Also you must have known something I don't, because yesterday I was wanting a new Ray mod

There's nothing to really be said about this. It's just a really awesome Ray mod! I'm glad to finally have an actual Ray mod that isn't that one mod with SegaSonic sprites. Has all the perks of beautiful animations and sprites, and some extra things for those that use BattleMod.

Can't wait to see what you guys are cooking next! Team Hooligan(Bean, Bark, and an upgraded Fang)? IDW characters? Tikal? You guys seem to be going for obscure and/ or non-playable characters, but whichever it'll be, I'll be there!

My guy finally got the mod he deserves. Hats off to the team behind this!

Cool since no one else seems to be doing a proper review so far as of writing this, I guess I will then.

-Sprites-

Props to the spriters, I think they did a wonderful job with ray, all of his animations are expressive and fun, and really show off his personality, and I personally think the sprites really carried the whole show. As a spriter myself I will always have respect for mods like these that give the characters a fun personality just by their sprites, and every spriter in the credits should be proud of what they did, clearly there was love and effort put into them.

-Moveset-

This is the major weak point of the mod for me, for one it's just Ray, so like it isn't really anything unique, but that's more of a nitpick. The glide is weird, but once again it's Ray, so yawl really couldn't do much, but the glide doesn't feel as fun to use, especially since you are now in a 3d space compared to 2D. But once again that's more on the devs trying their hardest to be as faithful to the source material. But there is one genuinely bad thing, and that's the wall cling. I genuinely hate how it's a toggle unlike mighty's where you just held the button, and I think it would have made more sense to make it a held thing like Mighty's. Overall the moveset really brought him down a bit.

-Battlemod-

idk i don't play.

-Conclusion-

Ray is a wonderfully animated character that shows off his bubbly personality, and displays a great amount of love and passion put into him, but I cannot justifiably give him a 5 star rating as he is brought down by a move set that is a little clunky to use.

Great work overall tho! I cannot wait to see what else you put out in the future!
