How to use linedefs?

Ok before i start please do not say use the wiki because i have already been there and it seems to not help for me right now.
Anyway I have no clue how im meant to make the linedefs (telleport, wind ect) to work I think it involves making a sector outside the main sector but about all i know can anyone help?

Yeah. You're right. Linedef Effects are placed on sectors outside the main map. Check out the editing forum for "No Linedef left behind"
