Is it safe to port forward?

I was planning on hosting my own server, but for what I know I have to mess with some stuff of the IP and I don't feel like breaking anything. From 1 to 10 can someone tell me how safe it is? And the dangers of doing so?

There's no risk involved. I've hosted on and off for the past thirteen or so years and never had problems resulting from port forwarding.

The real challenge is just getting your ports forwarded in the first place. Every router requires slightly different steps, so it might take some trial and error. You can use the forum's master server tab to help see if your server is showing up or not.
