Is using sprites from other games for character WADs prohibited?

As the title implies, I want to know if I'm allowed to use sprites seen in other games to make characters. Is that prohibited? Or is some amount of editing required before it's considered OK?

I'm not saying I can't sprite something myself, I just want to know.

Rule 12. Do not post recolors, sprite rips, music replacements, or timer SOCs. These submissions will be rejected, and repeated submission will result in bans.

So yeah. I'm not sure how well editing would go over, but I would assume it wouldn't go over too well.

Direct sprite rips are not okay. For example, if you rip sprites from Sonic Advance's Sonic and implement them into a wad, that's no good.

EDIT: Great. The latest version of SLADE requires a runtime that I don't have and am unable to install on this PC for reasons unrelated to it's performance (possibly) and the only version I can run is possibly outdated. I apologize for wasting everyone's time.
