Custom buttons on the Android port

I know that that the port wasn't made by the official STJR, but I can't find any other place to ask...
Many characters use the Custom 1, 2 and 3 buttons (Modern Sonic, Kirby, Yoshi, SMS, and others). The only way I can play SRB2 right now is by using my cheap phone, and I like it so far. However, I can't seem to find a way to use the Custom buttons. They don't show up on-screen and in Settings they aren't set to anything. And I can't set them to anything, either.
So, is there a way to use those or they aren't possible without modifying the source code?
