The best way to start learning character mods is to copy and paste a vanilla character’s info into a new file in Slade and then mess with how it all functions.
For map making, there’s a Zone Builder tutorial in the Guides section that should help you

You should probably not make a character yet if you're new to modding, but good luck if you decide to try anyway.
