I find the spells are of better quality, and I believe the magic system itself is more intuitive, with you regaining magic when you're moving slowly.
I tend to just keep the magic menu open all the time. I mean, why not? It's not like you can't use your spells when you have it open. All closing it does is make it harder to switch spells and makes some of the hud smaller.
I'm not sure what's your thought process for the passive abilities. You start using no passives. The first two, the fire dash and the fire jump, are neat - You get more powerful abilities, but in exchange you burn up your magic like crazy. And then there's Fast Regen. Why would you EVER not want this? And THEN there's the triple jump, something that costs 10 MP, but you can very easily just... not use it. It's something you use AFTER the double jump, not as a MP-boosted double jump. And then there's the option to use no passive ability. If all passive spells were as notable MP burners as the fire dash and the fire jump, I'd see a use for it. But there's no reason to not use Fast Regen! It's a straight upgrade, why would you turn it off? And why would you not equip triple-jump over... nothing?
With the last two passive spells, I'd almost think they would be something you either earn somehow or something you equip like the skills in Sonic Generations, where you get up to 100 skill points and 5 slots to apply buffs to the Sonics.
The tornado looks nice, but it lifts you up so slowly and not even that high. In practice, the ability to lift yourself up with a tornado only gets serious use when you stack two or three on top of each other... using the majority of your magic in the process. Perhaps the hitboxes for lifting you up could be taller? Using the tornado to deflect attacks is neat, though.
The poor optimization hurts pretty much the entire latter half of the game for me. For one example: Castle Eggman act 2. Just having attack boost, defense boost, or the two ring spells selected drops my FPS from about 30 to 6-7. Summoning a tornado drops it to 8-10.
And SPEAKING of Castle Eggman, that zone's boss must HATE wind because WOW does he waste your time should you use a tornado on him. If you use it when he's in his first phase, he will just slowly start to rise. All the way to the invisible ceiling. Past the invisible ceiling. Up, up, and away, until he goes so high he teleports way underneath the stage, and you have to wait about 9 minutes total waiting for him to come back into range. Please don't summon a tornado against that boss, it sucks.
I think attack boost doesn't have a high enough cost. Even among custom characters, there aren't too many who can deal more than one damage, with the two exceptions I can think of being SMS and Adventure Sonic. That said, you can continuously use Attack and Defense boost with only yourself in range, and you'll buff yourself once and then just waste MP. You don't even reset how long it lasts, it just... uses more MP if you try casting it again.
The double jump is so bad at stopping a fall. Using it to get a bit of extra height works fine enough if you use it while rising, but when you use it while falling it's hard to tell if it's even doing anything to help.
Trying to switch spells is also difficult to do in a pinch. I played through a bit of Chaos Mode and I noticed I didn't even bother switching from Fast Regen. Trying to switch spells also just felt clunky when I wanted to use attack boost, then defense boost, then go back to fireball or sometimes spindash.
I miss being able to refill my MP with rings. With the new system, I imagine it would be 1 ring = 1 MP.
No matter what spell you have equipped, you can use shield abilities. It's a little awkward. I feel you should only be able to use it when you equip the spindash.
Being able to buff your regular attacks to deal 2 damage is neat, but I want a spell that's that destructive, and my mind keeps telling me it should be a lightning bolt.

I upgraded the Tornado a bit. And also nerfed Fast regen. And Triple jump is now Jump boost that boost you higher. Also i somehow fixed lag with 5 abilities (idk about tornado, tornado is just object hell)
EDIT: Also just made Attack boost kill GFZ boss with 3 hits and enter brak`s second phase in 3 hits.

As i said Attack boost is now very powerful and op and it costs now 100 Mp. Shields not only activate with Spindash as "Main magic".
And cant do much with switching spells in a hurry. Fast regen. gives you mana faster when standing but if you use magic then you will have mana cost doubled (1 New attack boost will cost you 200 mp)
