Well, it works. You can run all the way up it, and all the way down it. This is part of my Rebirth Green Hill Zone Act 2.

Old news, there's a much better slope in GFZ2, near the end, you can barely see the steps.
 
Really? I never noticed. I'm gonna go play it now.

Edit: Ooo..I see it. Mine's steeper though. I haven't seen uses of slopes that go above a 45 degree angle.
 
The slope should use texture and flat alignment, like this:

I honestly think that slopes are more 2D-oriented. They can allow Sonic to lose X momentum without actually losing speed, thus providing a fair alternative for stopping a player when given the next challenge. If you look in Sonic 1, Sonic Advance, etc., that technique does get used to avoid cheapness, even with a proper 2D mode.
