Yeah, this is just a standard case of SRB2's trig math failing us yet again as it happens. Nothing to do with what mode you play in or anything, this is SRB2's physics playing up!
 
Oh right, pretty sure this turned out to be an issue with R_PointToAngle2, which I fixed a while back in the public next branch. Issue marked as fixed unless I happen to be wrong somehow.
