I just recently got Half-Life 2 on Steam, and I would like some recommendations of free mods.

Or sequels of bought-out source mods(or goldensource mods!). Or Alien Swarm, which is a (free) remake of a bought-out UT2004 mod. Or portal, which while being bought out didn't start out as a mod at all.

Basically, Valve brings in a lot of people.

I'd look for "Too Many Crates" Its a mod about breaking crates. However, some crates explode, some are worth 10 crates, 2 are painted pink.
 
Best Source mods I've played are Fortress Forever(A TFC remake - it died because the devs are making another version that reworks shit/it came out during TF2 so it wasn't that popular anyway) And Empires(Sorta like Savage 2 if you've played - Shooter and RTS). Too bad they're both dead.
