Default Could someone with C++ knowledge help me out a bit?

Okay, here's my thing. I learned how to code mainly text based games with an inferior language (MacTuring for those interested) waaay back in high school. Now that I have a little more time on my hands, and have access to a much better language, I would like to make a game that I would actually release someday. Specifically, a shoot em up in the vein of Gradius/R-Type/what have you. And I have a somewhat beginner's level of knowledge of C++. My question is, do any of you happen to know of tutorials or whatever that would be helpful in what I'm trying to do? And don't say go to school, I'm mainly doing this in my spare time, not looking to actually do this for a living.

Any help you could give me would be very much appreciated. I know it will be a long and hard road, but I am willing to do this, because I absolutely love the shmup genre.

http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/ was helpful for me.

Anyway, if you are going to create a shmup you might want to check out http://www.yoyogames.com/make. It's very simple and predestinated for creating shmups. You don't even have to pay the full version to do this.
