What games had the best soundtracks? The worst? Were there particular songs that made you rock out loud, or totally mute the TV?

I always thought F-Zero had some pretty hardcore music ( Mute City was just so awesome they had to keep it in Smash Bros ).. And Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon had upbeat Japanese tunes that made me tap my foot, especially during all the giant robot fight scenes.

I miss the Impact theme song.

"Dash-Dash-Dash!"

Jazz Jackrabbit.

The themes from Crystalis, Technoir, Marbelara, Medivo, Tubelectric, Dreempipes, should I go on?

(Meh, and I forgot to spell half of them too...)

Those tracks simply rocked out loud. Good rock/techno mixes are always good in my book.

Phoenix's theme from F-Zero GX, the alternative big blue theme, story 5 theme.

Also, Open Your Heart, Live And Learn, E.G.G.M.A.N, It Doesn't Matter (Both), what I'm made of.

Oh, and definetely the Otherworld theme for FFX, as well as Real Emotion (FFX-2), "Summoned Beat Battle", aka, final boss of FFX, One Winged Angel from FFVII, Liberi Fatali from FFVIII... I'm also partial to the "Hymn Of The Fayth" from FFX.

Halo's main theme is rather awesome, too. The "MJOLNIR" mix for Halo 2 was <3. The none-lyrical version of Blow Me Away fit some huge battle easily.

And finally, the Legend Of Zelda theme... for some reason.

Hmm... Absolute all time favorite game music:

Sonic 2: Wing Fortress
Vectorman 2: Spider Queen Boss, Shadow Nose
Sonic 3d Blast: Second Boss Music
Sonic Adventure: Open Your Heart, Gamma's Theme, Tikal's Theme, Final Egg 1

All time least favorite:

Sonic 3d Blast: Genesis Final Boss Music
Sonic Adventure: Unknown from M.E., My Sweet Passion, Casinopolis Lobby

Songs I like but kinda bother me:

Sonic Adventure: Believe in Myself
Sonic Heroes: CHAOTIX, What I'm Made Of

Wing Fortress has always been among my favorite Sonic songs, and at the moment, the only reason it is not my absolute favorite is because I listen to it so often. The Vectorman music I like is from two bosses with one having a haunting theme and the other being the final boss. I like Final Egg music because it reminds me somewhat of a cross between Metropolis and a certain level that has slipped my mind. E-102's theme I like because of its uniqueness and its suitability to the characters story.

The songs I absolutely hate, would be ones that either match the level in no way at all, or ones that I just can't stand listening to. The Genesis Final Boss for Sonic 3d Blast is a real nuisance hearing a light, skippy, and somewhat muted music for the final boss. The knux rap is just plain annoying however much it may fit the character. (Probably has the funniest lyrics I've heard though with the chuckles and muscles bit) Amy's is just annoying, how very fitting... Finally the Casinopolis Lobby music is probably the worst level BGM I've ever heard, being more suited to an rpg.

As for my third category, "Believe in Myself" I've always liked but is really quite cliche and that bothers me. "CHAOTIX" I might like but I've never really heard the lyrics... "What I'm Made Of" also has a somewhat overused theme.

I hate lyrical SA-ish music. Crush 40, while decent, is utterly dominated by real bands. Crush 40 was made for Sega, by Sega. :<

And NiGHTS music all the way.

Oh god yes, I LOVE Goemon's music. I really need to get that game running in an emulator.

Jazz Jackrabbit.

Say, have you listened to some of the songs from Jazz Jackrabbit 3? I personally didn't like the ones from 2 so much, save for Lab and Hell, but JJ3's got a really nice score.

And yes, JJ1 had some pretty good songs too. If you have ModPlug Tracker or another tracking program, you can open the SONGx.PSM files and listen to them.

HALO MUSIC ALL THE WAY!! I like the way they mixed the ancient temple music with awesome rock it gets you kinda pumped up to shoot some aliens, the only song I dont like is the opening song to the Halo 1 title screen.....

I didn't know Halo HAD music. There was never any when I was playing multiplayer..

I liked "Viewtiful World", for whatever reason I have. It's that much more entertaining to watch the PS2 version of the music video, though.

Gah I forgot Sonic CD, and mostly all games outside SEGA I am not very familiar with. I grew up on SEGA and Westwood...

EDIT: And I never like music from Westwood anyways.

Multiplayer lacks any music.

That was only for Halo 2, and only a few of the tracks fused rock elements with it. Although, Halo music all the way. :P Especially the good ol' Blood Gulch Symphony of Assault Weapons. Music to my ears.

Entire soundtracks, since listing each individual track would take ages:

-Ape Escape
-Blinx: The Time Sweeper*
-Brave Fencer Musashi*
-Chrono Trigger
-Clockwork Knight 1 & 2*
-Croc: Legend of the Gobbos*
-Dangerous Seed
-Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine
-Einhänder
-Final Fantasy 8
-Mega Man - The Wily Wars - Wily's Tower
-Radiant Silvergun
-Ragnarok Online
-Silhouette Mirage
-Skullmonkies
-Sonic CD (Jap)*
-Sonic 3D Blast (Both Genesis and Saturn)
-Sonic 3 & Knuckles
-Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2
-Twinkle Star Sprites

* Denotes a favorite.

The House Of The Dead had music like a movie (well, the game by itself was somehow made like a movie, you know, the cutscenes). Also Carmageddon 2 has Iron Maiden in the background (I'm a liar, it's in the CD, but you can put any CD-Audio and it'll work, the game just cycles between tracks, the only thing you lose without the game CD is the intro movie).
