This will be using TheSonicRetard's NeedleMouse engine.

The engine is going to be using a colour palette system with 256 simultaneous colours on screen at once, and all the spites are going to be based on the original games colours, but with four levels of lighting.

No plans for how it's going to be distributed as of yet, they aren't looking that far ahead. They really are just doing it out of love for the game.

Sega have a history for looking at fan-made projects like this and hiring teams based on it. Really, this type of thing would sell bucketloads on the various digital distribution platforms, it would be crazy to not give these guys jobs in this humble bloggers opinion.

The end goal is to remake the entire game, and with the passion and talent shown so far, I cannot wait to see the end result.

Comment on what you think (This is not my project)

I've seen topics about this on the Sonic Retro forums.

The graphics look really nice and bright. However, Sonic looks kinda weird on the title screen.

I dunno. There's something about low-quality graphics that appeals to me more than HD next gen stuff. It doesn't look bad, I'm just not interested.

Those pix are sexy. Can't wait for this to be done. When is completion planned for anyway? INB4 "When it's DoneTM"

basically what you said but its a community project so people just upload their sprites and then if there good enough they will be added :P

ehh... People are always welcome to try andstuff for this. But from what I've seen, the quality has to be VERY good.

Uhh, a single 256-color palette for HD-quality graphics? If you're going for that kind of spec, you should rename the project "Sonic 2 SD". The Sonic sprite alone is 244 colors according to my image program's Count Image Colors. Granted, you could reduce the number of colors, but smooth gradients would take a hit, being forced to either have banding or dithering, neither of which would look very HD.

This isn't my project, i just thought id bring it into the forum :S, it even says that in the first post

I lol'd at there no being any music.
I think that'd be the hardest part to reinterpretate without screwing up.
Screw up the song, get millions of fanboys angry.

I'm actually glad that it won't be in. As a matter of fact, the songs are terribly unfitting. I really only like Aquatic Ruins, Wing fortress, Winter Hill's, and Dust Hill's song. (The 2-player Mystic Cave song) I recommend them remixing the songs; will make it more "HD-like."

Wow...those pictures are very detailed. I wonder how long it took them to get this far, let alone how long it will take them to finish the project.

I've been following S2HD for quite some time, it's fun to see how much focus they put into every single detail...

Of course, I have my doubts about this ever being completed (SRB2 is taking 10+ years and it's nowhere near as ambitious, not to mention that SRB2 is a source code modification while S2HD is starting from scratch), but they do have a considerable amount of people behind the project, so you never know.
