What's Your Keyboard Layout?

Zubat

With 2.1's support for add-on characters with multiple abilities, I've wondered if it might be a problem for some people to map out the new controls. I'm not necessarily here to "solve" this, but rather to talk with some people publicly to see what layout they have, and whether or not others might change their layouts so they can hit all the commands they need in a case where an added character has multiple custom abilities.

I play using a Mouse + WASD layout. On splitscreen for Player 2 I use Arrow Key + Numpad layout or USB Controller. I never use analog.

Player 1 (Mouse + WASD):

Mouse Movement - Rotate Camera

W - Forward
A - Strafe Left
S - Backward
D- Strafe Right
Space Bar - Spin
Left Click - Jump
Right Click - Ring Toss
Scroll Wheel - Change Weapon
Q - Toss Flag
E - Normal Ring Toss
T - Talk
X - Toggle Chasecam
R - Custom 1
F - Custom 2
C - Custom 3
Tab - Rankings/Scores
P - Pause
` - Console

Player 2
(Arrow Keys + Numpad):

Up Arrow - Forward
Left Arrow - Strafe Left
Down Arrow - Backward
Right Arrow - Strafe Right
Numpad 4 - Turn Left
Numpad 5
- Spin
Numpad 6
-
Turn Right
Numpad 8
- Jump
Numpad 0 - Ring Toss
Numpad 7 + 9 - Change Weapon
Numpad Plus - Toss Flag
Right Ctrl - Normal Ring Toss
Numpad Enter - Toggle Chasecam
Numpad 1 - Custom 1
Numpad 2 - Custom 2
Numpad 3 - Custom 3

Player 2 (USB Controller, in a PlayStation layout):

Left Analog - Movement (w/strafe)
Right Analog - Rotate Camera
X - Jump
Circle - Custom 1
Triangle - Custom 2
Square - Spin
L1/R1 - Change Weapon
L2 - Custom 3
L3 - Toggle Chasecam
R2 - Ring Toss
R3 -
Toss Flag
Start - Pause
Select - Console

I use a USB keyboard with number pad.

UP - Forward
LEFT - Turn left
DOWN - Backward
RIGHT - Turn right
RIGHT CONTROL - Strafe left
ZERO ON NUMBER PAD - Strafe right
C - Jump
X - Spin
Z - Reserved for custom character moves

Since I don't play any game modes that aren't co-op, I don't need to bother with anything more specific than this. The number pad is just about the same distance from the directional keys as the alphabetical side of the keyboard, so right ctrl and 0 are directly to the left and right of left and right, respectively. It works well enough.

I usually don't play Match, so I use a keyboard-only layout.

up arrow - forward
back arrow - backward
left arrow - turn left
right arrow - turn right

S - jump
W - spin
A - strafe left
D - strafe right

Here's mine:

UP/W: Forward
LEFT/A: Turn left
RIGHT/D: Turn right
DOWN/S: Backward
SPACE: Jump
X/MOUSE2: Spin
E: Strafe left
R: Strafe right
C: Center camera
V: 1st/3rd person
Q: Custom move

And they're way more for me...

I mostly play single player, but sometimes I set up a private offline server just to check out the super transformations of various wads. The controls I have set up work for all modes for me, but then again I've been playing this game for two years... I'm kind of used to my layout.

Forward - Up Arrow
Backwards - Down Arrow
Turn Left - Left Arrow
Turn Right - Right Arrow
Strafe Left - A
Strafe Right - D
Jump - Space Bar
Spin - Z

Fire - X
Fire Normal - C
Toggle Chasecam - V <-- note to people, this player control actually exists!

Toss Flag - '
Look Up - Page Up
Look Down - Page Down

Custom 1 - B
Custom 2 - N
Custom 3 - M

Rest is really unimportant honestly, I've always been a full-keyboard guy anyhow. =V

Occasionally I do use the mouse too whenever I can be bothered, but my controls don't support this very well obviously!

Forward - Up arrow/W
Backwards - Back arrow/S
Turn Left - Left arrow
Turn Right - Right arrow
Strafe Left/B] - A
Strafe Right D
Jump - Z
Spin - X

Basically, the defaults + strafe. This looks like it would be uncomfortable, but I've grown to it.

Directional Movement - Arrow Keys
Jump - X
Spin - Z
Toggle Chasecam - L

These are the only controls I regularly use.

Movement/Strafing: WASD
Jump: Left-click
Spin: Middle-click

Toss Ring: Right-click
Toss Ring Normal: Left Control
Weapon Toggle: Mouse wheel
Toss Flag: Mouse thumb button

Disable Mouselook: Space
Toggle Chasecam: Left Shift
Reset Chasecam: R
Custom Actions: 1, 2, 3 (the ones above WASD, not the numberpad)

My mouse buttons are flipped from what I used to use because my mouse has a short in the right button and that affects jumping a lot worse than shooting. (I really need to replace it, but I can't find another 5-button for $15.) I haven't played a lot of Match/CTF recently, so when I do I keep jumping instead of shooting lol thanks muscle memory

Also, I have Q bound to pause;wait 1;pause so I can frame-advance when testing maps.

Movement: Arrow keys
Strafe: U and I
Jump: / or left click in mouse mode
Spin: . or middle click in mouse mode

Toss Ring: ; or right-click in mouse mode
Weapon Toggles: O/P or mouse wheel in mouse mode
Toss Flag: ,

Setrings 5000: 1
Character Change: 2 for Sonic, 3 for Tails, and 4 for Knuckles
Custom Chasecam (SkyCam) switch (cam_dist 325; cam_height 50; cam_speed 0.15): *
Disable Chasecam: 0
Custom Actions: J, K, L

In certain situations, I'll change my cam_height to 125 in order to blind shot people, especially in Nimbus Ruins' bases.

I play using a unique blend of chasecam 1 and chasecam 0, though I use chasecam 1 more, even in CTF and match. It's just my style, and I'm very good at it.

USB Keyboard

Movement = Arrow Keys
Jump = Space Bar (Sounds weird but it works trust me)
Z = Spin
X = Ring Toss
WASD = Stafe (for when I very rarely use it)
ASD = Lua Custom Buttons
Shift = Toss flag

Hm, alright then. Using a USB Keyboard / Mouse combo.

Movement (Turning): Arrow Keys
Movement (Strafing): WASD
Jump: X & Right Click
Spin: Z & E
Toss Flag: Q
Talk (Normal): T & Enter
Talk (Team): Y
Toggle Chasecam: V
Ring Toss: Left Click
Ring Toss Normal: Middle Click
LUA Custom: R, F, G

From what I can remember, anyway.
My layout is designed so I can quick-swap from a normal 3rd-Person Co-op perspective [Keyboard Only] to 1st-Person Match perspective. [Keyboard & Mouse]

For first person I basically use the standard FPS controls. Third person:

Forward/backward and turning - arrow keys
Strafe - A and D
Jump - S
Spin - Shift

I also have
Fire - Space
Fire Normal - W

but those rarely come up.

I don't play online much anymore, so...

Movement/turning: WASD
Strafe: Q and E
Jump: Space
Spin: Shift
Lua custom actions: Z, X, and C

Wow. I didn't know that so many people played without the mouse. It sounds interesting, but I'm so used to being able to turn as fast as I need to when the time calls for it.

It's not even an online thing for me. I play using the mouse naturally.

You're not the only one. I'd consider myself a heavy mouse user when it comes to SRB2, which is kinda why most of my layout's on the left-hand side of the keyboard. Though I don't use the keyboard for turning myself around.

WASD: Movement and strafing.
Space: Jump.
X: Spin.
mouse1: shoot, or whatever.
mouse2: some other kind of shooting.
scroll wheel: cycle through weapons (why would anyone not use this)
I think I have a couple others changed that I never use.

I'll always stick with the keyboard and mouse settings. I don't like the feel of how controllers work in SRB2. Plus, I feel I have more control using a keyboard/mouse setup than trying to figure out the best set up for a controller. Anyway, here are mine:

Forward: W
Backward: S
Strafe Left: A
Strafe Right: D

Jump: Right mouse button
Spin: Q
Ring Toss: Left mouse button
Weapon Cycle: Mouse wheel up/down
Talk: Enter
Team Talk: Y
Toss Flag: '
Toggle Chasecam: 9

Camera Movement: Mouse

And for key binds that I have for an Autoexec script file I have:

"skin Sonic" : 0
"skin Tails" : -
"skin Knuckles" : =

That's pretty much it.
