Causing netgames to lag

So some friends of mine are playing netgames in SRB2. I'm invited to join them, so I brush off SRB2 and start it up. Unfortunately, every time I join their netgame, everyone starts to lag, and it only clears up when I leave. This is making me sad, as I can't play netgames with my friends because I unintentionally ruin their game by causing them to lag. How can I stop this from happening?

If your download speed is less than 5.00 MB, I would highly suggest getting a newer router/modem.

Are you using Windows 7?
