What I mean by light source, is by which direction the light is shining down.

So if the light is coming from the left, then the shades should go from light to dark from left to right. If the light is above the character, the shade should go from light to dark from the top to the bottom.

Personally, I think this character just has a poor concept altogether. You can make that bud with a face have so much detail, but it'll still be all around creepy.

Try redesigning it so that it's much more pleasing to the eye, possibly without a massive smile and beady eyes.

I've seriously had enough of Duon starting threads and conversations where he posts a terrible sprite, then everyone tells him it's terrible, then everyone does a better job that still sucks, etc. etc.

Enough already.
