How do you add custom textures?

I'm making a new level now. Egg Factory. A full-on level WAD. I thought it'd be creative to have a few exit signs. I've made the graphic. I've tried putting it into gfx.WAD with WadAuthor, but it won't work. So, I assume it's not done that way.
So... How do you?

TEXTURE1 and PNAMES. I believe a441 had a program that would convert the lumps into usable files, though he doesn't give it out anymore. hotdog003 offered me it a while ago, though nothing came of it... >_>;

I have those tools as well, but I prefer XWE for texturing stuff now... Yeah, it messes up your texture1 and pnames the first time you use it, since they weren't made with 8 characters in each and every texture's name, but once you got it sorted out, it becomes a breeze... I used it for SPMoves' seasons. Yep... Seasons are fun...

Yes, that's what a lot of people do. I was told the same. But like all things that have bugs, you can learn to avoid them. Many times XWE would randomly replace a lump with a graphic I was working on or something, but that's okey because it's easily avoided by staying awake. Oh, and SPMoves was once massive because I didn't know that XWE keeps backup data IN the wad itself, which is rather annoying... And it thinks that pink is transparent and flats must be 64x64... But that can be avoided through your standard backup means of importing raw lumps...
