Official Level Design Contest Voting: July/August 2008

Doing Single Player levels only, since I can't get anyonr for the Match/CTF/Race modes.

Waterfall Town --- 1/10
Comments: Terrible. Very little design, obvious linear path, no scenery, barely any rings or enemies, and it took me 20 seconds to get to the end sign, which, by the way, falls out of the sky.

Poison Palace --- 8/10
Comments: Very interesting, if not a little long. Certain parts of the level seemed to slow down the flow that is in Sonic games, but it doesn't handicap the level terribly. Very interesting gimmicks in this level, and gets my vote as the best Single Player level for this contest.

Scrap Brain Zone --- 2/10
Comments: Confusing. 2D mode doesn't work very well in SRB2, as we all know by now. It felt like a maze, which are bad for SRB2. Also, I didn't really like the music that was put into it. Next time, try using the in-game music.

That actually is the Game Gear Scrap Brain music. Also, my philosophy on 2D mode has changed from "it fails" to "it is difficult to design properly for, but it can be done."

EDIT: I'll Begin, are you gonna vote or not?

you all fail at rating maps due to corporate mind control

I wasn't going to make this post, but the votes are here are horrible. As such I'll be describing every bad thing about the levels in detail (Well, not in detail). I have no idea if the deadline for voting has passed or not, but I don't care, I'm voting anyways.

Single Player:
Waterfall Town Zone, Act 1 by Superusuario - 1/10
It should be obvious what's wrong with this level, but my main problem is that people are actually giving it votes from 2 to 5. What's wrong with you people?

Poison Palace Zone by SonicMaster - 5/10
First off, this is the best level in single player. That does not mean it is good. Overused gimmicks, overused platforming, cheap deaths, maze-like areas, some lag in one area that required good timing, etc. Also, you do not need four turrets in one goddamned room, no matter how big the room is.

Scrap Brain Zone, Act 3 by Glaber - 3/10
Maze-like. GOOD DAY TO YOU, SIR.

Match:
MAPA1 - Combination Zone by Superusuario - 1/10
*Points to review for Waterfall Town.*

MAPA3 - Sky Island Zone by Roy Kirby - 4/10
Auto-rail docks a point.

MAPA4 - Moon Milkshake Zone by SonicMaster - 1/10
ohgod. I knew you weren't as good as a level maker as everyone makes you out to be, but this?

MAPA5 - Factory Zone by Chaos - N/A
Cannot vote due to biasedness. Though it would probably be around 5/10.

MAPA6 - Nightopeon Casino by Kuja - 3/10
Nice decoration, but too big.

MAPA7 - Awesome by Torgo - 0/10
Joke Wad, so I'm rating based on how comical it is.

MAPA8 - Hidden Palace Zone by Knockout the Echidna - 3/10
Too symmetrical.

MAPA9 - Haiff Zone by DarkWarrior - 0/10
Another joke wad, so more different rating scenario. Though it would get the same rating anyways; I got all of the rings (800+) in less than 1 minute, 30 seconds, and I wasn't even trying hard.

CTF:
Haven't played in a while, forgotten my reviews.

Circuit:
MAPAC - Los Pants Gehts Zone by SonicMaster - 5/10
The map seems like it's based on trying to mess you up if you don't know what's coming next. I was thokking the whole way through and didn't mess up once. As such, failure in both concept and execution. Although the overall gameplay was kind of fun.

MAPAD - Medivo Circuit N Zone by Glaber 2/10
Nights is hard to make good levels with, etc., drillfest, etc.

---
Things in my rating system:
1s are for maps with no effort shown.
0s are for unplayable maps and most Joke WADs.

Also, notice that there aren't any maps above 5. 5 is average in the correct rating system. And with that, I take my leave.

His reviews on all maps weren't helpful at all, but a vote is a vote....
It's also very obvious that he didn't really play the multiplayer levels online.

what is vote

sCrap Brain Zone = 2/10
Poison Palace Zone = 7/10
Waterfall Town = 1/10

Some extra comments on Poison Palace:
Okay, Crumbling platforms over opaque slime and an unavoidable deathpit is NOT cool. :( Also, stopping Knux from climbing would have been better if you made certain walls stick out near the top to prevent Knux from climbing too high. I found myself falling when Knuckles could have easily recovered in most stages. Other parts where you stopped Knux from climbing were just annoying and mean.

In the end, the level design was good (I especially liked the character-specific routes) and it looked rather nice too, while still running well even on MY computer. Good job, SonicMaster.

I'll pass on the multiplayer maps, like the last couple of contests. I don't play multiplayer all that much.

Actually, my little brother thought Poison Palace was quite ugly, and I started thinking that too, but apparently, many of you think differently. ^_^

I, too, became worried about the crumbling platforms at the beginning, but since neither Blade, Kuja, nor Boinciel complained, I left them in there. And lol, your score only lowered my stage's score by 0.01 points.

0.01 points DOES count, though. :P

I'm actually not surprised at Scrap Brain's reception with how bad 2d mode currently is, but like Endless Mine it helped me with learning how to make SRB2 2D levels and I'm already coming up with new ideas for a new 2d Circuit level. (This aught to be interesting)

2D Circuit = bad idea. The trick to making a good 2D stage was shown in SRB1 Remake, and that's stopping the player dead with an unexpected wall/spring, THEN presenting them with a challenge. You CANNOT use that technique in Circuit and expect it to be good. We don't want a Circuit based on how well we memorize the stage, kthxbai.

And please, don't port another stage. I would have given your stage a 3/10, but the whole you-didn't-make-it fact said to me, "Rate it a 0."

EDIT: If you wanna make another 2D stage, MAKE IT SINGLE PLAYER, because there's a chance it could actually turn out decent; it's happened before. It is impossible to make a decent 2D multiplayer stage with this mode.

2D Circuit stages are bad ideas? Well, that'll probably explain why the topic for my Sonic Factory Zone, a 2D Circuit level which I released ages ago, almost got no replys to it.

Until the major issues with 2D mode are fixed (Which won't be until SRB2 1.1) I would suggest at not using the mode at all. Granted, my 2D levels that I made were on the right track, but since 2D mode in SRB2 sucked, it made the level play even worse than before.
