2.2 Preview - With Slopes!

Why is Doomship/Grand Eggship being made if its the lowest priority? Could 2.2 have ARZ, RVZ and DCZ as well?

I think some of our devs *cough* just felt like making Grand Eggship anyway despite that fact. =P Don't expect it to be in 2.2 necessarily though, if anything expect ACZ to be finished for 2.2.

We amble around when making content for the game. We've always done that. 2.1 was supposed to just be CEZ, and we got Lua too. 2.2 was supposed to be just ACZ, and we got slopes too, along with potentially a few act remakes if they're ready in time. We make what we want rather than focusing specifically on "get this done by this time", which does mean developing the release priorities takes longer, but also helps avoid burnout from working on things we aren't interested in.

It's also more of a proof of concept than an actual stage. It's only slightly larger than the old Blue Mountain Zone proof of concept from 2.0. Basically, it's being used for brainstorming ideas, not actually creating the stage.

There was going to be a level called Blue Mountain Zone act 2 that was going to be after Red Volcano Zone act 1, but it was scrapped and the second act of RVZ is just going to be a volcano level like the first act.

Why no snow level in the official game? Couldn't THZ1 or CEZ1 become a snow map?

SRB2 doesn't necessarily have to hit every level theme. Note that in any individual classic Sonic game, there's at least a level theme or two that doesn't appear. Sonic 1 doesn't have an outer space level, Sonic CD doesn't hit on a lava/volcano theme, Sonic 2 has no winter level, and there's no urban (city) theme in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

What we are actually missing in SRB2 is most notably, the carnival/casino theme. I would say that the game's current physics make typical carnival/casino theme gimmicks, like a pinball table, not possible, but someone's gonna reply to me and say wuh-oh, impossibility: possible'd (and yeah, this is assuming that gets included in a future release)

fun fact: the above link was pre-slopes

Flipside Frenzy is... one of those things I really should get back to one of these days. It's HEAVILY reliant on Lua, though, which is a pain to port to hardcode even if we were actively considering that map's inclusion in a future release (which would also require the map to be more than three rooms, which is its size currently). So don't get your totino popes up.

The Lua integration adds a lot of processor overhead as soon as it's activated (maps like CEZ2 can slow down to a crawl on less-powerful computers with a blank script), so we don't want to invoke it in the unmodified game. It's handy for rapid prototyping and giving modders more options without EXE mods, but the final vanilla game needs all the spare CPU cycles it can get.

No, that's because modern OSes don't support it much anymore if at all, it's been deprecated for years now. (correct me if I'm wrong here)

Well...this is exciting. Though I was personally hoping Grand Eggship would be an airship, so as to not have two consecutive space levels. That and the name suggested that to me as well. Oh well. Still cool.

I think it'll be like THZ. Like one inside area and one outside area.
