I'm trying to use a Ps1 controller as a joystick. Help?

I'm trying to set it up for player 2 in match mode.

Here's the initial thing I tried:

D-pad Up: Move forward
D-pad Down: Move backward
D-pad Left: Strafe Left
D-pad Right: Strafe Right

Triangle: Move camera up
X: Move camera down
Square: Move camera left
O: Move Camera Right

Well, the D-pad refuses to be assigned to movement commands. So that doesn't work.

Second thing I *Tried* to try:

The Analog sticks. THEY DON'T WORK AT ALL!

Any help on these? I want a COMPLETE walkthrough on setting either up, so it'll be at least semi-fair for my friend, who wants a fair playing field.

And before you ask, the second mouse thing didn't work.

That'd be no problem, really. It's not piracy or anything if it's the last freeware version.

Do the analog sticks show activity in control panel? If so, you need to use the joystick setup menu to assign the axis...es(?) to the actions.
