hoo boy, we should've had this out MONTHS ago

What is it?

Thokker is a new team-based gametype inspired by soccer. Kick a variety of balls through a variety of maps, and try to be the first to score three goals on your opponents! Character stat tweaks and balances have also been made, so everyone is a viable team player.


What kind of balances?

I'm glad you asked!

Sonic has a slightly nerfed thok, BUT he's still by far the best offensive player for moving the ball around due to his sheer speed.

Tails makes a good goalie, because her flight creates gusts of wind that push the ball away from her.

Knuckles is a defensive wall, thanks to his ability to bowl over other players by gliding into them. (Balance-wise, his climbing was also sped up)


Maps?


We're shipping with 15 maps, categorized into four sets.

Spoiler: The Vanilla Set

A set of maps based on levels from the SRB2 single player campaign.


Green Cove - The smallest map in the pack. The ledges by the bridges are a great place to shoot a goal from.


Tumbleweed Canyon - An average-sized canyon map. Trenches toward the middle allow for some tricky jukes with the ball. (Fun fact: this was the first Thokker map designed!)


Courtyard Eggman - A wide open courtyard means plenty of room to run. Take it down to the dungeon for some up-close-and-personal action!


Spoiler: The Fanservice Set

A set of maps based on various addon levels.


Danger Forest - A fierce showdown in the streets. The nets strewn about are great to kick the ball around and sneak up on the goal with.


Sonic's Schoolhouse - The only Thokker map with mirrored symmetry in the pack. Try to kick the ball all the way through the goal and make it out the other end!


Glacier Gear - An uphill trek with sticky goop in the middle. The ramps leading up to the goal can be pulled down by standing on a button, forcing the other team to take the long way around.


Spoiler: The Crossover Set

A set of levels inspired by games that aren't SRB2.


Treasure Town - Inspired by Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. The gates for each team open and close on a timer, but you can still kick the ball over with a well-placed spindash!


Claws For Alarm - Inspired by Bubsy 3D. I don't know why VAda made this, but it completes the set.


Big Shell Plant - Inspired by Metal Gear Solid. The largest Thokker map in the pack. Don't kick the ball off the side!*

*you cannot actually kick the ball off the side


Spoiler: The Community Set

A set of levels made by other community members.


Nameless Base - Oh no.


Rocket Run - LEGO of your inhibitions and boot the tire around the racetrack, using the teleports to your advantage!


Ancient Relic - A night-time desert map. This is basically the best map in the game.


Geyser Gush - It's time to get wet.


Slime Station - A simple chemical plant is the perfect place to have a game of... Brakker.


Petroleum Refinery - Fight your way through the industrial park to the challenging aerial goals.



But who made it?

Thokker is brought to you primarily by Team Smiles, composed of the following:

fickleheart - Main concept, project head, main EXE development, Lua script development, level design (Green Cove, Tumbleweed Canyon, Treasure Town), slapdash logo
toaster - Project second-in-command, Lua script development, graphics, level design (Danger Forest, Glacier Gear)
chi.miru - Assistant EXE development, level design (Big Shell Plant)
Boinciel - Level design (Courtyard Eggman, Sonic's Schoolhouse)

Minor note: There were a few bugfixes too. Here's a full changelog, but I didn't really wanna clutter the first post with it.
  • UPDATE: .thk file now compatible with 2.1.15; all the bugs introduced in that update fixed, independent exe deprecated (sorry red)
  • UPDATE: 4 new maps in the Community set, creating a virtual second act of small/medium/large maps within.
  • UPDATE: The filesize of all of the music has been reduced. Granted, we've just added more so the file's still larger than before, but it's the thought that counts.
  • FEATURE: It's now impossible to attempt to load a Thokker map in any gametype other than Team Match, since we don't have an exe to arbitrarily hide the other gametypes. Yep, that's right. We were on top of Team Match all along! (Now the "Thokker" labels the level select icons have are actually useful, as opposed to redundant)
  • FEATURE: Tails' gust thrust now in whatever direction he's aiming, reducing the chaos of his ability from un-fun stalemating levels.
  • BUGFIX: Tails' gust thrust is only boosted when you're pressing jump, not pressing jump and holding spin at the same time to get closer to the ground.
  • BUGFIX: Getting the ball into the goal without touching it no longer causes a hook removal. This was possible when, say, a Tails player blows it around with inattentive or nonpresent members of the other team completely failing to stop it.
  • BUGFIX: You can't drown to water or space whilst the pre-match timer's counting down.
  • BUGFIX: The ball now tries to take account of reverse gravity, but it's possible there's something in the base game that doesn't that we haven't overwritten, 'cause what rudimentary testing I did on that felt wrong
  • BUGFIX: Ancient Relic's music now properly loops

It was hard enough work getting v1.1 out without any real support of netgame testing, so there probably won't be another update until 2.2 comes out and our motivation to work on something like this increases again. There's some fun concepts which REALLY change the game, but without spare time and energy they just ain't happening for now. Sorry, kids.

It's the ball. It should be a tumbleweed in that map because that's how it is in the level header.

Red removed functionality from LUA_BALL, possibly on the request of Mystic or someone if the long term plan is to merge Thokker into vanilla and the multiple-visual-appearances thing for the ball is an issue. This is no longer the case!

It's time to play 1.1.1!
  • Hugs and kisses, we all made up. The balls now change with the maps again.
  • Claws For Alarm is now flatter and less frustrating. Thanks, VAda!
  • I might've touched the script a kersmidgen, but I can't remember how, so shrug.
  • Now called b_thokker.wad. The wad name will change with every release. The next version will obviously be called thokker.butt.

This is a fun game mode IMO. It can get a bit fustrating.

Thokker 1.1.1.1 is out. The only change is a fix to a long-standing desync issue for new joiners mid-round. Now people can play again!
