Hey all!

So today we’re excited to be introducing something new. We’ve created a Discord server and added it directly to the main page. You can also check it out here.

The reason we’re doing this is because there’s been a noticeably downward trend in IRC activity, and Discord has been increasingly popular as a chat program. Many people coming here don’t readily have an IRC client available, and Discord also has a built-in web application.* This should make it much easier for new members to work with and navigate easily.* We’re hoping that this will help new players and modders easily engage and have a good time

As we are trying to expand community access, we are also actively looking for staff. We do understand that there have been lots of small sub-communities that have been formed lately (Kart Krew, just as an example), and we’re hoping to get people from those groups to be staff members. We want a wide variety of input from various people who are active in different groups. The diversity of opinions will help ensure that the staff caters to as many peoples’ interests as possible. So if you’re part of a group and can think of someone who would be a good staff member, please, PM either me or one of the other admins either here or on Discord, and let us know who you think should be added to staff. Please also be sure to give good reasons for the recommendation. We will, of course, have the final say (We need to be sure that the people we are giving moderation titles to can actually be good moderators), but again, we are actively seeking out people who themselves have been active in smaller circles.

I hope to see you all there. Happy chatting everyone!

I've been wanting this for a while as well. While there were unofficial Discord communities, I ultimately didn't stick around those. I'd like to lurk this official one and drop in once and a while.

Man, RIP #srb2fun. Fun while it lasted, even if most of the new joiners any more were just there to ask where to find a Discord server.

Anyway time to continuously pop in and out of the community and complain about the changing tides of communication

How long has the IRC channel been around? When the only alternative to IRC was Skype, IRC was better organized (and more reliable) overall.

Discord's doing fairly well at killing Skype, especially as its video chat feature is being slowly released to the masses, but I didn't expect it to depopulate IRC channels too. IRC always seemed like its own niche separate from IM services.

Eh, the IRC has its place. The Discord will certainly be more active because it's popular, but having all the different discussions happening at once can be overwhelming; a smaller, more concentrated place is nice to retreat to when that happens. It could just be me being a stubborn oldbie too.

Besides, this gives us a great excuse to quarantine all the shitty memes to the Discord and keep the IRC tolerable :^)

Except for the fact that we already banned them ;)

It's not exactly "depopulated" 'fun as such (we still have around ~45-50 users hanging around there as we speak), we just don't get many new users going there now. They just all go to Discord these days. =P

Was HTTPS on the Forums also added today? :P
I remember checking a few days ago and it was still http, "That's soold..."
Meanwhile srb2.org was https, which made this even further jarring, glad to see HTTPS now, kudos to the admins.

Re: Discord
Was wondering about this the other day and thought one already existed, saw it now on SRB2.org and here we go.
Might join in a few days.

Yep, IRC definitely has it's place, also works much more reliably than Discord :V (and doesn't have just one environment instead of "Stable"/"Testing").
Old IRC FTW!

Good to hear, sounds like you're also active there from time to time, great to see some Veterans, might pay it a visit or two soon.

If there's ever the request, afaik there's a bot that forwards messages from one Discord Channel to IRC and Vice Versa, so both places can still be kept alive, afaik it sometimes breaks but there might be multiple different implementations for this.
Of course I'm sure this can be configured to only forward one channel so it's only #general and not #memes.

Ok, had the "feared" "preview post logout" error happen again, this time my post was saved, wonder if this is something that others have as well but this isn't the topic to ask about that.

No, https has been used by the SRB2MB for a few years now as far as I know. But it is also available as regular http for reasons I forget offhand.

Back when https have been added, some people had problems connecting to the site, so Alam kept http as a failsafe for if some reason https isn't working.

Memes aren't banned. What is banned is spamming them without a care for the current topic of conversation. Everything in moderation... :P

I see, I must've gotten here via a google link, do wonder if we can have a option to toggle this and always redirect to https for security measures(wonder what issues other users had, should be sorted out but it's good that they still kept it for users that had issues)

True, as long as stuff gets used right there's no harm to it, so being too strict can be bad, however with the Sonic Community and "Immature Kids"(I'm not saying physical age = mental age, definitely not) I can understand why one would go a strict route.
Does sound good through, looking forward to it and it seems nice that this way was chosen, we do have Veterans who should be mature enough and I hope new users get used to this quickly.

So true. This site is a part of the Internet. And the Internet is not complete without Memes. Like this one:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBfMEUiobfE (I love this Meme)

Since I have made myself noticed in the SRB2 Discord server... Gratz to you guys for having an official one. While I am not "back" by any means, I have joined said server since Discord runs in the background for me.

P.S It has been awhile since my last post on here. Lots of changes... :)

If you think the community is dead or quiet, please join the discord. The community is actually a lot more alive than you think! And unlike IRC, which was super depressing for some reason, this one is fun!

It's not uncommon to hear "The mb is dead" in there, and it's probs because all the activity really is in there.

Also, if you like 2.2 leaks, here's a gif Sphere used to describe the #mapping channel :)
