Official Level Design Contest Voting: January-February 2007

There's still a question of whether or not Aegix's match vote counts. See, he only voted on one map, and, not only that, but gave it a tremendously high score. So, should it be counted? Some people think it shouldn't, and I haven't heard anyone actually say it should be.

[edit]Furthermore, Spazzo switched from CTF to Match mode after a bit, so that's why I only have 1 match map entry. After about 10 minutes of match, I logged off. (we had unlimited time going)

*Sees the scores of CTF* Ohh So close. Yet not close enough for Daimondus to win. Better watch it Mystic, next contest could be even closer in CTF.

Also How many other maps with the WOP gotten higher than 0?

I sucked more than usual in this contest. Not that I was expecting myself to win but I was hoping for a higher grade overall. Oh well.

It's not the score that irked me. It's the fact that you only voted on one map. When you vote on one map, it throws off any math someone may be doing to determine contest winner. (other than Mystic's math, as he presides over the contest.) I have no problems with anyone giving maps high scores. I just don't like it when they do it for only a few (in this case one) isolated maps.

Basically, it's how I regret having to score these contests. Averages are REALLY awful for low numbers of data. I'd MUCH rather use the median, but then it would always end in a gigantic tie.

Hence, if you vote a really high score on a single map, and then don't vote on any other, the average will take that high score and amplify it, on that map only. If you voted high on most of the maps, or gave all the maps a score, that wouldn't be a problem, but just voting 9 on one map in a category is a significant anomaly when it's the simple average of the scores. It's the same effect that you get when you miss an exam. Averaging in a zero into two 100s still produces a 67%, which isn't exactly a good grade.

FYI, your score wasn't counted for that exact reason.

I wish there was a better way to determine a winner, but for the life of me I can't think of one that isn't overly complex and/or stupid.

This system's worked fine for years. Why change it? A map has to be liked by most if not all people voting in order for it to win-that's the way it should be; if we are to hold up a map as the pinnacle of level design, it should be one people can see as amazing, no matter who they are.

The problem, ST, is the following scenario.

Map 1: 10, 9, 9, 9, 0 - Average = 7.4
Map 2: 8, 8, 8, 7, 7 - Average = 7.6

Which map deserves to win?

Under the current system, map 2 would win because the average is slightly above map 1, but it's clear that most people, except for that one person, liked map 1 more.

I tried to fix this with the "drop the lowest" feature when you vote on the other maps, but this contest just had the opposite issue, because all the maps were so bad that a single _high_ score would skew the average.

There's no good solution to this except getting a ton of votes, which I'm glad _did_ happen this contest. If we continue to have this kind of voter turnout, the contest will be fair, but if voter turnout declines, this kind of stuff is a major issue that doesn't have a particularly good answer.

What the farking hell, Mystic's average is higher than mine. Blasphemy! Total , evil Blasphemy! Ghar, this is not nice. This is pure evil on a stick. Bah, how *did* this happen? It's so wrong! Meh, stupid blasphemous evil bias-like ratings, how I hate thee. You are sooooo mean, I just feel like kicking you in the face. And taking all your base. And bikes.

lol face and base rhyme

Untill next contest, you demonic male-woman-guy! I shall defeat you! Curse my crappy level design skills.

Meh, I still think that the idea of this "map making contest" still needs reworking. Why? The highest match map got a 7.2 average. A 7.2 average. That's considered a B- in our schoolboard.

This isn't going by a school's grading scale, though. I'm not sure about other people, but I generally use 5 to mean Average, which means that a 7.2 map should actually be pretty enjoyable.

Seriously, the idea here is to use the rest of the scale, not just 7-10 like most reviews do.

0 = Absolute crap
5 = Average
10 = I cannot think of a way to improve this any further.

If I give your map a 5, that means "okay". It doesn't mean 50%/Failure.

*takes notes*

ok, I'll use that kind of scale next time.

Maybe you could add that scale to the voting rules or something?

Why don't you put that in 72 point font at the end of the first post or something?

It's been in every single contest announcement post for as long as I can remember. Not his fault you guys don't read.
