For the last week, protesters have been filling up Wall Street.

Spread the word. Together, we can take the fucking Machine down.

I see the point of that Amazing Atheist video, but I don't agree with it. The reason why America is in the economic mess it is today is because financial institutions made a whole lot of loans to people that couldn't realistically afford to pay them back. Granted, the financial institutions should have had better restraint, but so should have the people who initiated those loans in the first place. Restraint is a quality that has historically been lacking at all socio-economic levels of American society, and it's kind of a shame we couldn't voluntarily embrace it before this mess happened. I suppose that's human nature.

Year ago, I used to think that financiers were pretty much the only people without jobs that were meaningful or beneficial to society. That was, of course, laughably wrong. Financiers make it possible to fund so much of the development that we have enjoyed, whether it be going to college with student loans, or buying a house with a mortgage, or funding business operations. And when you think about it, it takes a lot of personal courage to lend another person your money and trust that, one day, they might pay you back. Whether motivated by greed or not, we in America are definitely in a better position than we would be without financiers. It's just that when money-lending is driven to excess beyond safe capacity, bad things can happen, just like anything else.

I don't know if I support these Wall Street protests or not because it's hard to tell what exactly the protesters want. Okay, so 1% of Americans control a massively disproportionate share of the nation's wealth. What exactly should we do about that? Revise our taxation policies? That might work, and I think our subject in the Colosseum is a good place to mull over a couple of ideas on how to go about it. Alter laws / regulations on the financial industry? Again, I think that's a legitimate avenue to consider. "Shut down Wall Street" entirely? I object to that for the reasons I outlined in my second paragraph. Burn down Wall Street and initiate the Revolution, as some have suggested in response to the Amazing Atheist video? I can't agree with that, for practical and potentially moral reasons.

Honestly, the OP in this topic is kind of poorly written and provides about as much information as the movement seems to have any sense of direction or uniformity. A basic description of the movement would have sufficed, or at least a link to the relevant Wikipedia article.

Also, like Wombat said, I'm not sure exactly what cause (or system of government) they're trying to advocate for. I'm fine with Capitalism as long as there is accountability (which has sadly seen a downtrend in recent years). Anything more radical than that is something I'm not really comfortable supporting.

I don't really think they have a clue what they want, either. This whole thing seems like a "down with this sort of thing" kind of movement with absolutely no grounding in reality, never mind what they really want. I'm not saying that you can't have a revolution and reform the government, but you're going to need people a lot more pissed and with a dramatically larger percentage of the country that pissed in order to legitimately generate a revolution, with or without force. You can't just say "my life sucks, fix it" and expect any kind of positive change.

....Yeeeeaaaaahhh... I don't want to trash my retirement and savings any further, kthx.

A lot of people don't realize that their retirement accounts and/or pensions are directly tied to the financial performance of a lot of big companies. You take them down, and you go down, too....but unless you're not a total idiot, you don't find out until you turn 65 and wonder where your retirement is...

"If you don't know what's going on or what we're talking about..."

Yeah, right. What are you talking about? The only thing I know about this movement is that they hate Wall Street and the wealthiest percent of the US population because they're apparently greedy. The website couldn't tell me anything else. Sorry, but as long as you don't tell me exactly what your problem is, I'm not gonna take you seriously.

Right, what I DO know is that protests seem to get more and more common everyday, there's some serious shit going on in Athens (Greece) due to government's policies, and the protests have gotten... Violent.

As for this Wall Street protest, seems pretty stupid, I mean, they are complaining, but most people don't even know WHAT are they complaining about on the first place.

About time we feedback the govenment of we think about the country's finance. My parents told me about better economic times when Clinton was president.

Blame the banks, not your government (especially since it was the last government). Granted the banks should be punished if they do then who gives you loans?

Loan sharks! We revert back to Prohibition-era methods where if you want a lot of money, you better pay back a lot more or say goodbye to your kneecaps.

Yes, no one knows what "they" want but "anyone" else do.

'Anyone can make money from a crash', says market trader (BBC News)

"I don't care about stuff like that [the plans to save the economies]. Our job is making money from them [the crises]"
"Personally, I've been dreaming a moment like this for three years. I gonna confess: I've been dreaming every night with this recession"
"What I'm gonna say to everybody else is: get prepared (...) The governments don't rule the world. Goldman Sachs rules the world. Goldman Sachs does not care about this rescue package."
"Actually, I want to help people: You can make money from this [moment]."
"Protect what they [or you] have, because in 12 months the saving of millions of people is gonna vanish. And it's just the beginning"
Don't believe me? Go watch the interview yourself.

Look guys, do you want to keep living under the hands of corrupt minds that think that they can control your lives with the signing of a paper? Or do you want to finally take the fucking Caste System down? It's your call. It's your decision as it is mine. And I decided that I'm tired of the government trying to create "Harmony" with their little System. The peasants are still being kicked around by our Machine's wonderful little knights in blue clad garments.

Open your eyes. You want Oceania? We're fucking living in it. Turn off the telescreens and pay attention. You might learn something. Or... You could always turn in the people who want to help you into the Thought Police.

Your call, really. I'm just letting you know. Hey, they may call it the United States but it's just another Kingdom to me. And like all kingdoms they had a certain time in their life when they crumbled to dust, the way they should.

Greg, go get some tin foil for your mind's protection and make your nuclear bunker against the government's mind control rays. That's fine. The rest of us are sane and realize that while we don't appreciate the shitty direction our government is going in, the fact of the matter is that a significant percentage of our country legitimately likes the Tea Party and the other extremist opinions out there. You just have the opposite extremist opinion, which is just as bad. I want a moderate. Show me a movement for common fucking sense, where we go through with tax reform, make our government accountable for its own stupidity, and actually try to get the majority of the country behind their goals instead of pandering to the most extreme of their voter base. Let's have some legitimate change for the better instead of getting torches and pitchforks out and having a witch hunt for people who happen to be more successful at life than you and me.

As far as I can tell you're advocating socialism, and as we all discovered thanks to the 20th century, socialism sounds great in theory but completely breaks down in practice.

I can certify that.

These "revolution" crap never ends well, I strongly doubt these whole protests will lead to anything, but if I for a magical planet alignment satanic godly miracle against all odds, they actually did bring a new order, it woudn't be anything better than the Soviet Union was, or China before applying the only child law.

These "revolution" crap never ends well
East Germany? South Africa? I argue that even your country is better off under Chavez than under Jimenez.

Not to say that this particular attempt at a "revolution" isn't idiotic. I don't know what made you think it, but the banks don't control your life, Greg.

I don't know what made you think it, but the banks don't control your life, Greg.

......the banks don't control your life......

What the hell do you think you need to hand over to a grocery store in order to buy food? To buy your entertainment? To pay your utilities? Gas? Your own home?

Come back to me when you know what you're fucking talking about. The banks DO control your life. And who controls the banks? Think about that for a moment... Now let me ask you again. Do you want to take the Caste System down or do you want to live as a mindless drone until someone takes some action and brings the Machine down? Again, your choice. You're only working against yourselves, guys. And if you still don't know what the purpose of the Wall Street Protesting is then here you go:

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.
As one people, formerly divided by the color of our skin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or lack thereof, political party and cultural background, we acknowledge the reality: that there is only one race, the human race, and our survival requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their brethren; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.
They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give CEO's exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated gender inequality and discrimination in the workplace.
They have poisoned the food supply, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
They have continuously sought to end the rights of workers to negotiate their pay and make complaints about the safety of their workplace.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.
They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.
They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.
They have sold our privacy as a commodity.
They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.
They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.
They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.
They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.
They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.
They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people's lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.
They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty book keeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.
They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.
They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.
They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.
They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.
They have participated in a directly racist action by accepting the contract from the State of Georgia to murder Troy Davis.
To the people of the world,
We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.
Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.
To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.
Join us and make your voices heard!

I would say something about you trying to make me look as silly as possible, Mystic but I'd rather not waste my time. However I will say this, I don't give two shits about any form of economy, Party, or government. I only care for Anarchy. So don't try and tell me I believe in Socialism. I know what I believe and I stick to it.

@SpiritCrusher: Actually, no. As a matter of fact I was just today with a group of people from the Jimenez era, that are now doctors, lawyers and in general, people with a "wealthy" lifestyle, they all call Jimenez's time the golden years, it was a steady economy with alot of material progress and top-quality services (machines, laboratory equipment, light, water, you name it) but of course, since "poor" people didn't get any benefits from it, as many people (including me) admit it was an unequal government, the middle and high class of society did get the benefits, but with about half the country being "poor", the January 23 event happened, wich made him quit power.

As for Chavez, well, poor people screwing the country up again, in brief: 1989, the "Caracazo" occurs, a massive disorder from (mainly) poor people in wich they started destroying everything in a rampage due to the economy not having increased and making them fail to be able to give food to their family, the government took drastic actions and disabled Constitutional Rights, meaning, they see you, you get shot to death in order to control the multitude, this drastic measure made people get deep resentment to the government, generating the 1992 overthrow attempt lead by Chavez, it failed, and in order to stop the fight, they let Chavez speak in national Tv broadcast telling them to stop the attack, that was a bad move from the government, it ended up portraiting him as a hero for trying to oppose the "antihuman" government, he was set in jail for genocide, magnicide attempt, among others. But during the next government was one that opossed the one Chavez had tried to take down (In a "The enemy of my enemy is my friend") he was set free and all rights were restored, including, political ones. So of course the resented people because of the 1992 overtake attempt voted for him and he won, now we have a screwed up constitution, world's 4th highest inflation, colossal ghettoes and no "private" sector rights.

This wall street stuff feels similar, really, people opose the government for economical reasons, the government gives counter measures, people get angrier at the government for it, and well... I doubt somebody will try to overtake US for it, but whatever comes next, certainly won't be good.

@Greg: Eh, I bought a $7,000 1080p LED television by myself, and I don't have a credit card, the food I buy is also without using a credit card, I never go to banks, are they controlling my life somehow?
