Tech and games, forever!
One little question, why the SRB2NET.exe launcher was discontinued in 2004? that launcher was great!

  1. You can load WADs, select and deselect WADs
  2. Modify options without opening the game
  3. Put a Host in Multiplayer
  4. Clicking in Sonic and Tails image to receive messages saying me to stop
So, why was discontinued?

According to the download section of the srb2.org page:

An old launcher for the game. Please be aware that this launcher is quite old and may contain bugs. We are no longer updating this launcher.

I'm not sure who the actual developer was for the original SRB2NET launcher, so I'm going to assume that they had some other important things to work on. However, there have been two different launchers that do work with 2.1 if you want to give them a shot.

May not have the same quirks as the original, such as poking Sonic or Tails on the launcher to get them to say stuff, but it does what it says on the tin.

The simple answer is that it was programmed in Visual Basic 6, and that isn't exactly something anyone wants to deal with nowadays.

Even then, it's not compatible with 2.1 as far as I'm aware.

Really? While there's probably some things broken, I would've figured that the main stuff that people would use a launcher for (hosting, joining, wads, character select, etc) would be fine since they haven't changed much over the past few versions

I guess it must've been me when I first tried it out when 2.1 became available. I just tried it just now out of curiosity and turned out it worked. I've been using the other launchers since they worked better for me, though I only use it for adding wad files. I guess I should have tried it out again before assuming things.

Most I remember about the old SRB2 Net Launcher is that it's hopelessly out of date with the skin colors list, and perhaps the gametype selection. Otherwise it ...still works, yes.

I prefer to use SF94's launcher myself these days. At the very least it saves your settings, something the old launcher never did (annoyingly).

I have SRB2Net. It's great for those who are too lazy to type in addfile yadayada in the console.

Last I checked the launcher actually stated he was the "current maintainer". But then it hadn't been updated since 2006 or so.

Besides which, we have newer launchers in Releases now:

* SRB2 Launcher by sonicfreak94: https://mb.srb2.org/showthread.php?t=38488
* LauncherBlast2 by HitCoder: https://mb.srb2.org/showthread.php?t=42996

Personally I use SF94's launcher these days, it's pretty good.

(EDIT: Right, I already said as such, whoops, but still, here are links to the launchers anyway)
