What obscure games do you like?

I've been looking for games that scratch a roguelike itch but so far I couldn't find anything that looks interesting. I figured I'd broaden my horizons a bit and looked for just any game, not just a particular genre.

There are a lot of games out there that haven't become "mainstream" like "AAA" games have, and sometimes have an interesting mechanic or are just more of the same but executed pretty well.

Have you played something like that? Something not suuuuuper well known and fun to play?

Like for example Xonotic. 1v1 me :knuxsmug:

Now, this fits the "obscure" and debatably the "fun-to-play" part of the question but I will bend this a bit as the "me-physically-having-played-the-following-game-and-telling-through-experience" chapter has yet to be written so let the embedded video do most of the talking :knuxsmug:

Vangers here was shown to me as something potentially personally likeable; there are in fact a lot of appealing aspects to me! The design of the world, and the creatures, apparently having been human before due to lore reasons which by itself sounds intriguing in its own right, I think definitely would have swayed me and influenced my current fancies if I was shown it when I was younger. I will say picking up and actually playing it might not seem too inviting, for I see you would have to really work to upgrade the vehicle to get good handling and turning capabilities, along with dealing with multiple sources of things working against you.

It's a treat to know also that it actually is a late 90's game - at first glance I thought it was something made more recent-er and replicated aesthetics from that era, nah, it indeed is that old and is written with funny dialogue while not really borrowing influence from anything else as far as I can tell.

With Vangers it's safe to say it effectively has a genre all to itself, so if you somehow suddenly craved a top-down racing RPG sandbox space-sim adventure etc. etc. with alien insect hybrids in the far future with multiple endings... jackpot, you got your very weirdly amalgamated wish granted..!

A good third-person shooter i like to play is Age Of Zombies, especially on my Vita3K- i mean, totally legitimate PlayStation Vita system. If you know, you know. :knuxsmug:

In all seriousness, the game is pretty fun. You take the control of Barry Steakfries, a famous Halfbrick character, as he goes through diffrent eras of history to blast through zombies with shutguns, SMGs, Buzzsaws and more. There is also a Survival Mode, where you fight waves of these undead humans.
The game is rated Teen (cuss words, use of weapons and blood), and is available on Mobile/IOS (through Halfbrick +, which is fully free) and PlayStation Vita. Not sure if it is available for PC, though.

And i know, it is another zombie-shooter game, but i think it's here where it's executed right.

To be honest, Battle does have a good story; it's just that every single character has one. This is not really an issue in Mainline titles, especially Heroes where it's in a team format, but for a handheld title like Battle, I think the team got a bit far-fetched.

I mean, the game chronologically takes place after Shadow The Hedgehog (since the titular character knows his true backstory), and that game's overall mechanic just messed up the whole experience, so you can expect not the best coming afterwards. However, it IS a bit of a relief since Advance 3 goes after Battle.

the de blob games are not roguelikes, those are action adventure games. they can't scratch an itch for the genre i cherish
thanks for the suggestion though lol

if you are looking for good roguelike games, pls play Risk of Rain 2 or Risk of Rain Returns like they are incredibly good-ass games (and I don't even like roguelike games)

already played ror2, but i can't play it anymore due to lack of gpu
returns doesn't look fun to me. not because it's 2d, but because i already have ror and it's just ror again but with more grind for unlocks

I mean, technically ROR Returns is remaster of the first one aka actually good now (so, you right lol) but I have some other ones like Spelunky 2, Hades, Binding of Issac, Enter the Gungeon or Dead Cells other then that I'm out
