Well... Have you tried lspci in the console to be sure that Linux recongnizes your card? (This is a Just in Case thing, Linux should know a Radeon card.) Also, have you tried the ATI Catalyst Driver Installer, so that you can be sure you have proper drivers, since if it can't find a real driver...

Does this happen if you put it in windowed mode? I had a problem on mine that a res change would crash X, and my dad helped me do something to GRUB that fixed it.
